This unseemly acronym stands for the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, of which the 25th edition was held in Geneva from 19 to 23 January. The SIHH is a show devoted to world-class watchmaking of the highest standard. It will come as no surprise, then, that most of the watch companies featured are Swiss. Each year, the show is organised by the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH, Foundation of Fine Watchmaking) under the aegis of the Comité des Exposants (Committee of Exhibitors), which guarantees the show’s independence and ensures its core values of quality and excellence continue to prevail. The philosophy that has driven the SIHH ever since its creation is to promote excellence in its approach to the luxury watch industry and Fine Watchmaking, and to support brands as they extend this prestigious industry to the world’s best watch retailers. I was present at this year’s show and was able to witness first-hand that the driving factors behind Fine Watchmaking and the show itself are the supreme quality of the products exhibited and the selectiveness with which they are distributed. The event’s gradual, well-managed development shows just what a success it is. Everyone involved in the SIHH attaches the utmost importance to the perfection of their creations and an unwavering respect for the historical heritage established by two hundred years of experience. For some of the exhibiting brands, this tradition is especially strong: Baume et Mercier, for example, has existed since 1830, while Vacheron Constantin was founded in 1755. The heritage left behind by all these years is rich in artisanal techniques, refined expertise, tangible added value, skilful innovation, and iconic status earned by each watch’s unique beauty and perfection. It is a wonderful way to appreciate “the soul of Fine Watchmaking in the full plenitude of time!” as Fabienne Lupo, CEO of the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, so neatly put it. This year, sixteen stands were organised, with twelve Richemont group brands and four independent creators. The exhibitors vied for visitors’ attention in ingenious attempts to make their stand the most spectacular or refined. The Fondation also organised several workshops offering initiations to the traditions of watchmaking, in order to promote, inform and encourage new avenues into this complex art. The formula hasn’t lost its magic: this year, the show welcomed 14,500 visitors, 4% more than in 2014. The SIHH has still has a bright future.
