A quarter final with 2 Parisian teams
Any rugby fans regularly following this blog will no doubt be aware that one of the two quarter finals of the Top 14 will see two Parisian teams come face to face: the Stade Français and Le Racing Club 92 this Friday. Two clubs with a lot of rivalry between them. The winner will join the unstoppable Toulon and Clermont in the semi-final.
The Stade Français was built in 1883 or 1887 by students of the Saint Louis school who were passionate about this sport, which was played by British students in Paris. It was also the first team to take part in an international match in London, against Rosslyn Park in 1892. When the club was taken over by Max Guazzini in 1992, it was on a downward spiral, languishing in the second division. The arrival of Guazzini coincided with the club’s slow return to top level rugby, winning the Brennus Shield in 1998 (the last time it had won was in 1908). Four championship titles were to follow in the 2000s. Today, the Stade Français is known as one of the cornerstones of French rugby.
Le Racing was born at around the same time as the Stade (in 1882). A major protagonist in French rugby, the club won the first French Championships in a single match on 20 March 1892, beating the Stade Français Paris Rugby 4-3 (the Stade won the following year). The last time Le Racing won was in 1990, although it has had several auspicious periods, particularly in the 1950s and 60s. After the 1990 title, the club went into a period of decline. Amateurism, which is one of the founding values of the sport, sometimes conflicts with the demands of high level rugby. Le Racing was taken over for the first time in 1996 and then again in 2000. Bought once more in 2006 by its owner Jacky Lorenzetti, the club joined the Top 14 once again in 2009. Since then, it has embarked upon an ambitious recruitment drive which is now bearing fruit, with Le Racing having qualified several times for the final phase.
