Lège Cap Ferret: A pleasurable peninsula
Charlotte and I spent the long 15th of August public holiday weekend at Cap Ferret in Gironde staying with some friends. It was a total discovery for us both since neither of us had ever set foot in this lovely peninsula.
Less than an hour from Bordeaux, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Arcachon Basin, the Peninsula of Lège Cap Ferret is a 25-kilometre long stretch of astonishing nature. The first occupants of the Peninsula were fishermen from the villages of the Southern basin. During the fishing season they stayed on this coast which, sheltered from the Western and Northern winds, had a better climate. Gradually they moved their working cabins or set themselves up in old boats that would never see life at sea again. This is how the villages of Jacquets, Canon, Piraillan, L’Herbe and Cap Ferret grew up, villages that have featured on the list of picturesque sites since 1981. These villages are right on the beach and the fishermen’s cabins and homes, entirely made of wood, are often painted in bright colours. With the development of oyster farming, the appeal of these sites led to regulation regarding oyster farming constructions. A charter has been created by the municipality aiming to conserve and promote the characteristics of these cabins and to preserve the identity of these villages.
We arrived late Wednesday afternoon and soon felt the gentle rhythm and tranquillity of life in this spot where pine forests, beach and the sea form a happy trio. Straight away we decided to go for a walk on the beach which was just at the bottom of the garden of the house in which we were staying.
We devoted Thursday to a boat trip, and at 11am sharp we climbed onto the boat which would carry us until 6pm. We set off from the Pontoon at Le Grand Piquey on our White Shark 245 built by the naval constructor Kelt, rented to us by Bateau Loc.
We headed for Banc D’Arguin, where we had decided to have a picnic. We were navigating during a falling tide and as you can see from this photo it can be difficult going because there are sand banks everywhere but the boat’s small draft (0.6 m) made things a lot easier. So after a problem-free trip we picnicked on the Banc d’Arguin with a gorgeous view of the Great Dune of Pyla.
The afternoon’s navigation allowed us to see, from afar due to the low tide, the famous cabins on stilts and Arcachon bay’s Bird Island.
On the way back to our start-off point we stopped for a while at the Port de la Vigne, one of the rare ports in the basin near Cap Ferret.
How can I finish without saying a few words about the oysters? In any case we got back to Paris on Sunday and I am still alive, so I think it is safe to say that the oysters are good. I am no scientist but I think that the French technique of testing oysters is debatable. I believe that they were not considered as being edible during our stay since the last ban dated back to the 7th of August… but anyway we enjoyed them Chez Boulan (Place de la Douane – 33950 Lège Cap Ferret – Tel: +33 (0)5 56 60 77 32 – Practical information: Open daily from 9.30am to 3pm and from 5pm to 9pm. Tasting: from 11.30am to 3pm and from 6pm to 9pm. Open all year round) and at la Cabanne d’Edouard (Avenue Port Claouey – 33950 Lège Cap Ferret – Tel:  +33 (0)5 57 70 30 44)
Finally here are the restaurants that we recommend when staying at Cap Ferret:
– One of the ‘institutions’ of the island: Chez Hortense where you should try the ‘Moules Farcies’.
– At the pier landing-stage of Cap Ferret: L’Escale where you can enjoy your oysters with a view of the sea on the outdoor patio.
– For an aperitif you can also head for the pier landing-stage to sip a cool Sangria accompanied by tapas at the Bodéga de Marcel.
– Later in the evening you can drink a cocktail (I recommend the Mojito, it was delicious) at the Sail Fish
– You can also try La Vigne or Le Wharfzazate which often have concerts during the evening.

However, I am forced to criticise one restaurant where the welcome was just awful: La Pinasse Café. We had booked a table for 10.30pm, and between the moment we entered the restaurant asking to be seated and the time we left at around 11.25pm we saw 3 tables of friends of the boss or the waitress get a table before us, while we continued to wait! And not the slightest little gesture of apology. She even went as far as to give us the menus so that we could choose, but when 10 minutes later we had chosen, you guessed it… it was impossible to order.
Thank you Marie Alix and Théo for your welcome…
