Slawomir Mrozek : Une nuit à l’hôtel… Anecdote hôtelière Nº10

slawomir mrozek

Slawomir Mrozek: A night at the hotel…Hotel anecdote No. 10
A night at the hotel
I was just falling asleep when, from the other side of the wall, I heard a loud thud.
“That’s it, here we go,” I said to myself. “It’s going to be just like the well-known story: the man in the room next door takes off his shoe and drops it on the floor. I won’t be able to get to sleep now until he takes the other one off, and I could be waiting for ages.”
So I was mightily relieved when, shortly after, I heard the second thud.
I had fallen asleep, when suddenly a third sound of something falling resounded from behind the wall, dispelling any further possibility of sleep.
I wasn’t expecting that. Did the man in the room next door have three feet? Impossible. Had he put a shoe back on and then taken it off again? Unlikely. So, evidently there were two people in the room next door to me.
The torture had only just begun, exactly as I had predicted. The only thing that kept me going was the hope that, sooner or later, he was going to have to take off his shoe. The night progressed, and the second, or rather the fourth, noise kept me waiting, and waiting.
I didn’t get a wink of sleep all night and in the morning I went down for breakfast, completely exhausted. I met the man in the room next door. I looked everywhere for the second person but he was nowhere to be seen; just the one man. The second person must have gone to bed in a state of drunkenness and, given the lateness of the hour, had slept with one shoe still on.
“Have you got mice in your room?” enquired the man in the room next door. “Because I have. They were making such a racket that I had to shut them up by hitting them with my shoe.”
From that day on, I stopped thinking logically. One single stupid mouse is stronger than all logic, and logic only leads to sleepless nights.
