Arthus-Bertrand, the military jeweller:
Few are familiar with the 200 year-old jewellery house or its fascinating history. While the company has no connection with the famous photographer of the same name, the visual quality of their creations could arguably rival the artistic flair of the ‘HOME’ documentary director. The company’s incredible story began with the joining of two families after the French Revolution. One ran a military tailors shop producing flags and decorations for the army, and the other ran the French navy’s official military bookshop. The partnership marked the beginning of the company’s commitment to creating both civilian and military insignia for the French government. The acquired knowledge and skills established the jeweller as one of the best manufacturers of medals and jewellery, and the company was even commissioned to produce academic regalia swords.
Today, Arthus-Bertrand remains the official supplier of many decorations such as the Legion of Honour and the National Order of Merit. Numerous flags for government institutions are produced by the jewellers, who dye them by hand. These traditional skills stand the test of time, and the company is by no means small. Arthus-Bertrand employs around 300 staff, half of whom forms the creative team and ensures that the products and the work that goes into them are of the highest quality. With three shops in Paris, and also present in Lille and Bordeaux, there is no excuse for not going to admire their work.
